Gardens of the Nations

A Guide Book

When the Gardens of the Nations on the eleventh floor the Rockefeller Center were opened to the public on 16th April 1935, an illustrated guide book was produced and made available to buy by visitors.

And, like many attractions, visitors could also buy a postcard to send home or to keep as a reminder of their visit.

The guidebook contains black and white images and detailed information of all of the gardens that Ralph constructed, including images from the International Rock Garden;  The American Garden; the Bird Sanctuary; the Modern Garden as well as the Gardens from a variety of nations, including Holland, Italy, England and Spain.

The book also gives details of the Horticultural Hall, also found on the eleventh floor.

Part one of the booklet can be found here. Part two is here.

The English Garden featured prominently in Hancock's design.  A brief history of the garden and its eventual decline can be found here.
